“It was about then that she realised that the eel’s skin wasn’t quite normal. The few miserable specimens she had seen at the fishmarket had been a grey-green colour, as sickly-looking as the river water they’d been hooked from. This one was bright red. And completely smooth all the way down. No gills, no fins, no head.”
