“I always loved watching people panic. The chaos it caused, the tangible scent of fear that always came afterwards. Panic, then fear. That’s the way it always worked. The way their bodies froze up, the way their thoughts start racing as fast as their hearts, and the sweat that dripped down their foreheads, pungent sweat, sweet and hot. There were always people who tried futile control methods, like breathing, or repeating calming affirmations. And all the while, I admired their optimism.”
