“Grief could be such an alienating emotion. Society appeared to avoid discussions of sadness at all costs, leaving us as individuals to flail, lost at sea in our sorrow, until we ultimately drowned in it. What we needed was a lighthouse in the gloom; a safe haven in the darkness to show there was an end to the mourning. And maybe the ending wouldn’t be suddenly happy and maybe it wouldn’t be perfect, but we needed something to hope for, when everything felt hopeless.”
